Prehistory. Archaeologist suspects that about 15.000 years ago the first arrow has flown away out of a bow, but the oldest hard proofs are from between 10.000 and 11.000 ago. The bow was probable first used for hunting and later as a weapon. In the prehistory archery was adept at every continent (except Australia).
Classic civilizations. The old Greek, Romans and the Chinese had already enormous amounts of archers in their armies. Arrows were very destructive against large crowds and the use of archers could lead to a quick victory. Greek gods like Apollo are portraited often with a handbow. But also Greek heroes like Odysseus are often portraited with a bow. In the Odyssee is described that Odysseus had a bow that only he could stretch. Here a bow is also used as a symbol of power and standing.
Middle Ages. In the Europe of the Middle Ages the value of archery at the battlefield arised bit by bit. De Mongolians, with their short recurve bows of composite materials (horn and wood), perfectionised archery at the back of a horse and used it to dominate the Asian steppes and Eastern Europe. They fired while they were approaching the target, turned in their saddle and shotted again while they were riding away. During the English War the Englishmen perfectionised archery on foot. They were using a Longbow. Archers were trained from their childhood.
Formerly the most archers didn't had anymore than a stiff jacket and a helmet as protection, others had also taken other equipment from the battlefield to protect themself. They also had forearm protection of the same type that is still used. An archer has of course a Longbow, a few arrows and a few extra sinews. When the battle was over the arrows were looked up. Mostly the archer had also a small weapon like a dagger. The crossbow was very populair during the Middle Ages. It took a long time to train a Longbow archer and he had to practice frequently to keep his shooting skills, while it just took a short course to learn how to shoot a crossbow. The crossbow was more powerfull but also heavier then the most Longbows. The biggest disadvantage was the fact that it tooked more time to reload a crossbow. The introduction of firearms made that the bow was more and more unusefull at the battlefield. A riffle could shoot straight through a shield and didn't required a lot of exercise. In fact early firearms were for a long time less effective then a good trained Longbow archer.
Isicola offers different forms of archery. The two most popular games are; Count Up and Count Down. With Count Up you walk a circuit of 10 targets, variating of 25 till 125 cm. At every target you shoot three arrows. Then you calculate the points of the target and write them down at a score list. Who has the highest total at the end of the game, wins. With Count Down you begin with 1500 points. Then you walk a circuit of 10 targets and you have to end at exactly 0 (no less).
